Electrical Safety is a Serious Issue
On the job site, No one can replace a worker that has died or suffered by the consequences of an electrical accident. In the workplace, Electrical Safety is the most important job that can’t be neglected. People who is working on electrical line or equipment have a responsibility of protecting himself with electrical safety apparatus.
It is been observed that electrical accidents do not just happened but cause due to the non-observance of electrical machines operations and maintenance safety. Act 1910 and I.E. Rules 1956, made thereunder. Electrical incident safety report shows that electrical accidents happened due to these reasons:
  • Amateur workmanship & repairs
  • Defective Electrical Wiring
  • The lake of proper Electrical Maintenance
  • Use of non-standard & shoddy appliances
  • Ignorance about electricity fundamentals

What are Electrical Hazards?

Electrical Safety Hazards

An electrical hazard can be defined as a dangerous condition that is caused due to electrical contact with energized equipment or a conductor. Any electrical engineer in contact with these electrical hazards may sustain an injury from shock.

The main electrical hazards are due to:
  • Overhead power line
  • Damage tool and Equipment can cause fires
  • Contact with exposed electrical parts causing shock and burns
  • Operating electrical equipment in a wet location
  • Improper grounding of equipment
Knowing the damage and applying the best electrical safety practices can help reduce the risk of electrical shock and death. It is better to work within the scope of expertise because an absence of mistake or accident doesn’t mean there are no hazards.

Electrical Safety Hazards Awareness:

Electrical hazards grow with time and with the change in the process. Considering this technology change, updated statutory regulations needs periodic compliance assessments. Hence, hazard identification has to be done periodically.
  1. Electrical Hazards:
Here are the following hazards when using Electricity:
                   A.     PRIMARY HAZARDS:
                           a. Electrical Shock
                           b. Burns 1) Joules Burns 2)Flash over burns
                           c. Fire & Exploration 1) Spark 2) Static Electricity
                   B.     SECONDARY HAZARDS (Involuntary reflex action):
                            a.  Persons falling from height
                            b.  Dropping of tools and object
   2.  Definition of Electric Shock:
                    A. An electrical shock is a physical reaction or accidental stimulation of the body’s nervous system by electrical currents in direct contact with open circuits.
                   B. Effects of Electric Current on Man:
                             i.   Table 1 gives the effects of electric current on man.
ii.   Table 2 gives human resistance to electric current.

                   C.  How Shock Occurs:
Shock occurs when the body comes in direct contact with the electric circuit. Shock may occur in one of three ways.
                            1. A person may come in contact with both wires of the electric circuits.
                            2. With path occurs between an ungrounded conductor and the ground.
                            3. With a metallic part that has become hot by direct contact with energised

Basic Electrical Safety Rules:
Few basic electrical safety rules when working with electricity.
  1. Only qualified & hands-on experienced executive should do electrical work.
  2. Don’t work on the active circuit. If required, use a buddy system and use electrical protective equipment.
  3. Inform concerned people.
  4. Never use equipment with broken plug, damaged wire, and frayed cords.
  5. Confirm from terminal box or switch box that the all the circuits is open.
  6. Suggest executive to use insulated tools.
  7. Verify voltage and frequency of the circuit.
  8. Use wooden board for protection against electric current.
  9. Enclose high-voltage conductors.
  10. Don’t touch electric boards with a wet hand.
  11. Don’t try to repairing energized equipment.
  12. Always check all your GFCI’s during maintenance.
Why Electrical Safety Training is Relevant for Superiors Working in Industrial Plants?
People who work with live wires should understand the hazards due to high voltage batteries, live wires, and powerful electrical equipment, and power transformers. People who work with or operating live wires should know the basic principles of electricity. To train workers who work in industrial plants or power plant should attend electrical safety training to protect them from experiencing severe electrical injuries, and saves from an accident.

Regular training and electrical safety qualification will reduce the high risk of electricity in all industries.

Electrical Safety Training session can help mitigate the risk of electrical safety by keeping employees trained with the best practices of electrical safety.

As outlined in OSHA’s electrical safety standards, an affected plant must offer comprehensive electrical safety training to reduce the risk of electrical accidents.

Who should attend Electrical Safety Training?
  • Electric engineers and the assistance
  • People who are in Construction or electrical work who use power tools.
  • Employees who work in factories or manufacturing flammable glasses situated near sources of high voltage.
  • Administrative and other support staff who work in factories or plants.
Marcep Inc. has developed a successful model of electrical safety training workshops, designed especially for electrical professionals in manufacturing factories or plants. The purpose of conducting electrical safety training is to help engineers to protect their organization from electrical hazards.
