THE QUALITY OF MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND PLANT DURING RISK BASED INSPECTION PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLE FOR SIGNIFICANCE OF NON DESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION IN ASSESSMENT OF STRENGTH.
Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) serves as a big tool to detect internal conditions of materials, be it defects or specific material characteristics, that are required to be controlled for the satisfactory performance of the final product. NDE plays a key role in the Quality Assurance programme of any component in industry.
NDE is credited with the importance that the serviceability of the product is not impaired due to performing the non-destructive testing.
The modern-day Non-destructive Testing (NDT) field is a vast one and encompasses a host of methods, each one is unique in its principle of working. Acquiring a clear insight into the principle of working of the host of Nondestructive testing methods available today as well as understanding the merits and limitations of each one of them is essential to all concerned with the product to avail the best use of them.
It will assist them to apply the appropriate NDE method at appropriate stages of production, the extent of application and acceptance criteria being dictated by the service requirements of the product. This will enable everyone to contribute to enhancing the reliability of performance of the product which is our ultimate goal.
Types of defects one can foresee on engineering materials are of three categories, namely, Inherent defects (formed during the mill stage), Processing defects (formed during the processing of products from the raw material) and in-service defects (caused by service environments).
So, falling back on a suitable NDE method at each stage of production of products from raw material stage to the finished product shall help one to detect the defects at the right time, and take either rectification action or rejection at that stage itself. This will assist us to reduce the cost of processing a defective product and goes to increase the profitability.
NDE helps to detect not only defects that are existing at the type of examination, but, certain NDE’s help us to detect defects during their formation stage itself, which adds the new dimension to NDE. This ability of NDE to defect incipient defects gives us a warning about impending failures. It gives us time to take suitable preventive action to avoid undesirable accidents.
Knowledge of NDE is essential for all personnel associated with a product, right from the designer, through personnel involved in the Production, Quality Assurance, NDE and up to In-service Inspection activities. This Workshop shall give clear insight into all NDE methods, namely,
Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Eddy Current Testing (ET), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) and Helium Leak Testing (HLT).
Advancement in these conventional NDE’s also will be highlighted in the workshop. In addition, the workshop is intended to cover briefly the advanced NDE Methods such as Acoustic Emission, Thermography, Laser Holography etc whose potential needs to be known by all manufacturers in order to avail their uses as required for their product.
